Birth Control Options Besides “The Pill”

While “the pill” may be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about contraception, there are many other options out there. The physicians at The Guirguis Obstetrics & Gynecology Group offer a comprehensive variety of birth control options that can meet your needs, health-wise and on a personal level. The OB/GYN team can evaluate your family plans and recommend the right birth control option for you.

Birth control options abound

The birth control pill is a widely recognized form of contraception that can help protect you from an unintended pregnancy by preventing ovulation. While the pill is popular, there are other options that are just as popular and have different benefits. Some of the other options include the following:

Hormonal birth control

In addition to the pill, you may opt for another type of hormonal birth control, such as a vaginal ring or contraceptive patch. You may also be a candidate for the Nexplanon® implant. All of these contraceptive products work by steadily releasing hormones into your bloodstream to prevent ovulation.

Non-hormonal birth control

Non-hormonal birth control methods are often known as barrier methods, which include diaphragms and sponges that women must insert prior to sex. They also include condoms with spermicide that men apply before intercourse.

These methods are all safe and effective, but they may not be as convenient as the pill or other methods of birth control.

Intrauterine device

An intrauterine device, or IUD, prevents ovulation and also disrupts the journey of sperm to your egg. Intrauterine devices are a versatile form of birth control because there are hormone and non-hormone versions available to accommodate your health needs.

Intrauterine devices are implanted into your uterus by a skilled OB/GYN, so you never have to remember to take a pill or interrupt an intimate moment.

Choosing the best option for you

There are many factors that may influence your birth control decision. To help you narrow down your options, your doctor at The Guirguis Obstetrics & Gynecology Group will review your personal and family medical history and your age. Underlying health conditions and being over age 35 may rule out some options for birth control.

Another important factor that’s involved in choosing birth control concerns your family plans. For instance, if you plan to have children in the next several months, you may not be a good candidate for birth control pills, Nexplanon implants, or other long-term forms of birth control.

On the other hand, if you’re sure you’re finished having children, you may wish to pursue permanent options for birth control, such as tubal ligation if you’re a woman or a vasectomy if you’re a man.

Your OB/GYN will take the time to discuss all the relevant factors in choosing the right birth control method. This will reduce your risk for side effects or complications and ensure that you’re satisfied with your choice.

If you’re ready to discuss your options for birth control, book an appointment online or over the phone with The Guirguis Obstetrics & Gynecology Group today.
